Screenings can save your life

Vascular disease is caused by the buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries, which can narrow or completely block the artery. The heart, leg, and neck vessels are common sites of plaque build-up.

Vascular screening now available, call (540) 332-4127 to schedule today.

Risk Factors include

  • Increasing age
  • Lack of exercise
  • Poor dietary habits
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking or a history of smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Heredity
  • Diabetes

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screening

Peripheral artery disease places you at a significantly greater risk of heart disease.

Peripheral artery disease usually occurs in the legs. It’s a buildup of plaque in the arteries causing a narrowing or a complete blocking of blood flow. Symptoms may include fatigue, muscle cramping and aching with walking. The severity of the symptoms depends on the extent of the blockage and your level of activity. Those who walk very little may have no symptoms.

During a PAD screening, blood pressure cuffs are placed on the arms and ankles. A doppler is used to listen for the pulses and the blood pressure is measured at each location. The ankle pressures should be close to equal to the arm pressures. Ankle pressures diminish relative to the degree of arterial disease that’s present in the leg arteries.

Stroke Screening

Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the US and the first leading cause of disability in adults.

A stroke is caused by a significant narrowing or blockage to arteries that can diminish the blood supply to the brain, or a clot can form and flow to the brain. During a stroke screening, ultrasound is used to visualize the neck arteries, checking for buildup of plaque.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are the 13th leading cause of death in the US and are more common in men than in women.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm is defined an enlargement of the artery to greater than 3 cm. in diameter. One in ten men older than age 65 may have some enlargement of the abdominal aorta. Aneurysms do not hinder the flow of blood through the artery. The disease process is confined to the wall of the vessel and the vessel bulges out but the opening where the blood flows does not generally change, and that’s why a rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is sometimes called the “silent killer.” There are usually no symptoms of an aneurysm until it ruptures.

During an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening, ultrasound is used to visualize the abdominal aorta and measurements of
the vessel’s diameter are obtained.

Cost

ScreeningPrice
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screening$50
Stroke Screening (Carotid Artery)$50
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening$50
All three screenings$125

Screenings are not covered by most traditional health insurance plans. Flexible spending accounts may reimburse the fee. Check with your employer’s FSA agreement.

All screenings are performed by a registered vascular technologist under the supervision of a physician. Screenings are not diagnostic exams and are only intended to detect the presence or absence of vascular disease. Most vascular disease can be prevented or limited by healthy lifestyle changes. If detected, it’s time to make the appropriate decisions with your physician to prevent the progression of the disease.
