FISHERSVILLE, VIRGINIA—Augusta Health Foundation is excited to announce that its fundraising campaign for a new mobile medical unit has reached a significant milestone, securing $600,000 in donations to complete the purchase. In collaboration with the Augusta Health Neighborhood Clinic team and with generous community contributions, Augusta Health will extend its reach to deliver previously inaccessible essential healthcare services to underserved populations throughout the region.

The campaign for the mobile medical unit kicked off in April 2024, when the Neighborhood Clinic team, already operating “pop-up clinics” at 13 different locations, identified a growing demand for accessible mobile healthcare services. As community support grew, it became evident that a more flexible, on-the-go solution was essential to meet the needs of the population. Clint Merritt, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Augusta Health, delivered a passionate appeal at the Foundation’s fundraising event that sparked an overwhelming response. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the community, over $150,000 was raised that evening during the fundraising event to fund the mobile medical unit.

In September 2024, the team unveiled a prototype of the mobile medical unit at an Augusta Health campus event, drawing the attention of Kim Powell, a Physician Assistant with the Neighborhood Clinics. Powell recorded a video tour sharing the vision for the unit, which generated additional excitement among donors and community supporters. “The success of this project is a testament to the power of community collaboration,” Powell remarked. “This mobile unit will allow us to reach those in need, ensuring no one falls through the cracks. It will truly transform lives.” Augusta Health remains committed to providing accessible healthcare and actively seeks new partners to expand these vital initiatives further.

Thanks to the generous support of the community, Augusta Health will fully equip the mobile medical unit to provide primary care directly to patients in remote and underserved areas, at no cost to them. This initiative will ensure access to healthcare for individuals who may be unhoused, homebound, or lack reliable transportation. “We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received,” said Shirley Carter, Executive Director of the Augusta Health Foundation and Vice President of Philanthropy. “This collective generosity will make a lasting impact on those who need care the most. The mobile medical unit ensures we can provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

The mobile medical unit is part of Augusta Health’s efforts to meet people where they are, address health disparities, and support aging in rural areas. It is expected to be delivered and on the road by mid-2025 and will provide a safety net for those without reliable access to primary care, regardless of their financial status.   For more information or a complete list of neighborhood clinics, visit https://www.augustahealth.com/service/neighborhood-clinic/.
