Urology 101

Scheduling an appointment with a urologist can be intimidating. Talking about your urinary system may not feel comfortable, but please know these conditions are very common. You must be honest to return to feeling good and enjoying life.

Understanding more about what urologists do and what to expect is helpful. In some cases, your primary care provider may be able to treat mild urinary system issues. But suppose symptoms are severe or don’t go away. In that case, urologists work collaboratively with primary care, internal medicine, gynecology, geriatrics, and oncology to provide individualized care for the needs of each patient.

What is a urologist?
A urologist specializes in diagnosing and treating the male and female urinary systems and the male reproductive organs.

What is a urinary system?
The urinary system keeps your body clean by filtering and removing wastes and toxins from your body through the urinary tract. The urinary tract includes the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra. Urologic health is essential in both men and women as it is vital to overall health.

Types of health issues a urologist treats:

• Inability to control urination
• Prostate Cancer
• Kidney stones

Augusta Health is excited to add a Department of Urology at 70 Medical Center Circle, Suite 107, and will begin seeing patients on August 1, 2023. Staffed by urologist Brian Stisser, MD, the Urology Department will strongly emphasize quality patient care and will use the latest technology and equipment to provide various services and procedures. “I am excited to continue my relationship with the Augusta Health community,” said Brian Stisser, MD. “During my more than 10 years of practicing in this community, I have introduced and improved multiple aspects of urological care. I’m glad to offer that experience to our patients. Many opportunities exist for modern and comprehensive urological care, including the continued expansion of robotic surgical services. I feel very privileged to be a part of these changes.
